He paced the cramped kitchen, the linoleum floor cold beneath his bare feet. The old family bible, its cover cracked and worn, lay open on the counter, a silent testament to generations past. His father, in a rare moment of lucidity, had whispered about selling the pocket watch, the one he had always kept in his breast pocket.

Sweat beaded on his forehead, despite the chill. He stopped pacing and ran a hand through his thinning hair, tugging at the strands. The watch was more than just metal and glass; it was a touchstone, a tangible link to a man slowly fading away. He glared at the phone, its black plastic surface reflecting his own panicked face.

He had promised his sister he would handle it. He picked up the phone, the receiver heavy in his hand, and for a moment thought to throw the phone against the wall. Instead he dialed the number, his fingers numb.
